Get some P & Q in the backcountry with your friends and fellow recreationists on a hut-to-hut trip this winter. With the European concept catching on here in the States, there are more and more opportunities to either plan your own trip or book with a guide.
The famous Tenth Mountain Division Hut System based out of Aspen provides "how-to" advice for those interested in experiencing the serenity, challenge, and beauty of the backcountry in this way.
The basic 8 steps for planning a trip to a Tenth Mtn Division hut (follow the hyperlink for detailed information on each step):
- Gather
Info about the hut you're interested in, including route descriptions for how to access the hut, choosing a location you will be able to access at your skill and fitness level.
- Check availability of the hut for a number of possible dates.
- Designate a group organizer who can make the booking and who can coordinate for making group decisions.
- Reserve your trip as soon as you can. Hut-to-hut travel is becoming increasingly popular and booking early is the best way to ensure getting what you want.
- Purchase topographic maps for any area you will travel through as part of accessing the hut, or any area you are interested in exploring from that location.
- Prepare if you are not experienced: this means getting in some day trips in the backcountry or taking a winter skills course, getting advice from experienced friends, and boosting your fitness level if necessary.
- Return one signed waiver per person to 10th Mountain before departure.
- Bring your trip confirmation letter showing your door lock combination(s) with you to the hut. A good way to still have friends after the trip...show up with a way to get into the hut.
