A Walk in the (Ice) Park

Ouray Ice Park in Colorado

Is the Ouray Ice Park the coolest, dangerousest place you've ever seen or what? Located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, the Ouray Ice Park was opened in 1995 as the world's first park devoted exclusively to the sport of ice climbing.

Each year, climbers from all over the world gather at Ouray for the Ouray Ice Festival, which looks to me to be a pretty good time as long as you're standing on the right side of the safety rope.

Check out this great view of just one small part of this amazing outdoor recreation area:

Best of all? Ouray is run by a non-profit group of climbers with no government involvement! What's you're favorite outdoor recreation area?

I was in Ouray last year and Lake City the year before that. Quite a production that whole thing is. I was very impressed with the park and the quality of the ice for the amount of people they had running up each route. I was there this summer too...ha, besides the Toyota FJ Club rally they had going there it was fairly dead.

I'm not a climber nor an ice climber, and I didn't make it to the Sandstone fest. :) Just wondering if you perhaps had. I have heard it's a fun event. Camping, climbing, fireworks. There's also a Sandstone Paddle Fest in early May that I might go spectate at.

Not sure what happened to that link, but the correct one is: http://www.sandstoneicefest.com/

I did not...was it cool (your link is broken)? I didn't know you were into ice climbing!?

Hey Bruno, did you by any chance hit up the Sandstone Ice Fest in December?
