Dream Realized Soon Before Skier's Peril

Billy Poole

Salt Lake Tribune article

Extreme skier Billy Poole died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an accident in Utah's Big Cottonwood Canyon. As articles have explained, it turns out that Poole's lifelong dream was to ski for Warren Miller Entertainment, which has documented skiers and ski adventures for 58 years. Poole was slated to appear in the 59th annual film when he died during filming early this week.

I grew up watching Warren Miller videos and making the yearly trek downtown where the tour would stop and watch the latest film. My dad used to go every year when Warren himself would accompany the film and narrate it live.

Those days featured skiers in pristine powder bowls, lift line comedic errors, or adventurous treks half-way around the world. Today's high adrenaline, uber-extreme, hair raising stunts may be fun to watch in small doses, but the pristine glory of skiing that Warren Miller Entertainment has strayed from has its costs. This was the first death in the company's history.

I'm leaving for Little Cottonwood Canyon tonight and will remember the risk involved in trying to go too far.

I agree, but there seems to be a frantic drive to turn all outdoor sports into extreme. Ask Poole when he was 10 why he wanted to ski for Warren Miller and his answer most likely wouldn't be so he could jump off cliffs into a bed of rocks to metal music. He may have died an "extreme skier" but the scerenity that has been lost in Warren Miller Entertainment over the years was traded for that title.
Tragic. Unfortunately there are very real risks associated with extreme sports (otherwise they wouldn't be 'extreme').
