Children and the out doors.

Out door survival.

Everyone goes on about the out door skills and traditions being lost be different tribes and civilisations around the world but we seem to be forgetting our own. I have three children two boys and a girl. When home we are always out either climbing building shelters swimming in the river/lochs etc. I find my self-taking a lot of their friends with us as they never do any outdoors survival things with their parents. Euan my 7 year old could tell you how to find your way out of a forest if lost, he could build you a shelter using things around him, he can also tell you what wild things like berries mushrooms etc that you can eat. When I was 7 I got my first penknife, water bottle and compass I have kept this going with my children it learns them to be responsible.

It also makes going walks and that more exciting for them if they are being shown things along the way.

I don't have kids yet, but one thing that I'm worried about is the inevitable barrage of questions that I don't have answers to ("Can I eat that?", "What kind of plant is that?", etc.). What do you do when you just don't have the information to explain something to your children?
