Mystery of the missing bees

If I had skinned that bee, I could have made a pair of bumblebee-fuzz mittens. Seriously. It was huge.

Via the New York Times (months ago, but I just learned about this and it's freaking me out): Millions of bees are disappearing all over the US and nobody knows why. This is threatening, among other things, our ability to produce food.

I believe your photo is probably a bumble bee, while the threat is primarily to European honeybees. The bumble bee is one of our native solitary bees, meaning it doesn't live in large colonies. The honeybee is a colony nester and there is much evidence that that style of living is contributing to the problem. The big concern lies in the fact that the honeybee is the species used in commercial pollinating operations.
