My dad was a notorious rescuer. We lived in the country, where dogs go easily astray and are easily abandoned, so he mostly brought home those (MUCH to my mother's dismay). However, I remember a bird once. A big bird. (Like a crane...maybe?) He nursed it back to health until it could fly again. One of my uncles raised an orphan baby deer. It's mother had been hit by a car on the road near his farm. The doe grew up, left, came back the following year and gave birth to twins. This level of compassion coming from a family of hunters. Go figure.
