A survival kit should be inexpensive, simple, small enough to carry with you, and contain items, you know, that could actually help you survive. This one's designed for the wilderness, in cool to warm weather conditions.

Whistle
Chemical light stick
Emergency Candles (optional)
Small LED keychain flashlight
Tinfoil
Piece of paper

Water treatment
Poncho, OR a space blanket.

I find that a pencil is a better choice than a pen. You can mark on paper, wood and other materials with it and can even be shaved to make fire tinder (try that with a bic!).
