All this February snow keeps my boots on my feet most days, and I note how tired my body and feet feel each night. No doubt, the same holds true for hikes: should you add a pound (at least) of weight onto each of your feet. That's alot of extra work over a three or four day trip?
Support and grip (and sometimes warmth and dryness) are clearly the goal of hiking boots? Couldn't that be secured with a well-made pair of sneakers or even sandals? Is it ankle support that matters most, or is it really heel support that serves the feet best?

The question my boyfriend and I have, is whether the ankle support in a hiking boot helps or hurts us. As in does it weaken the ankles by supporting them, and not allowing certain muscles(?) to develop on their own?
Not me. I'll take lightweight shoes over boots any day of the week. The Solomon XA line are my shoe of choice at the moment.
For me, the ankle support is pretty important. Sandals are fine as long as you don't have to go over anything tricky, but the minute I start having to traverse rocks and boulders, I feel shacky without some support.
