Road to Adventure: Prepare Your Winter Car Kit

created on: 11/25/08
Now’s the best time to prepare yourself for the harsh effects of the winter season. If you intend to do any driving to ski resorts or distant backcountry skiing/snowshoeing destinations, be sure to prepare a winter kit for your car to protect yourself in case of a breakdown or weather issues.
Here’s some items to pack in your trunk:
1.       Blankets
2.       First Aid Kit
3.       Jug/Gallon of water
4.       Non-perishable can of food and opener
5.       Waterproof matches in a waterproof container or lighter
6.       Tire Traction (chains, bag of sand)
7.       Rags or paper towels to wipe down your windows from dirt/salt
8.       Extra clothing/insulation (jacket, hat, gloves, heavy boots)
9.       Roadside Kit w/emergency flagging sign/material
10.   Shovel
11.   Flashlight/Headlamp
12.   Rope
Also be sure that you have all the standard equipment: jumper cables, tire tools, maps and/or road atlas, and windshield scraper/brush. Multi-purpose items like multi-tool and duct tape are always handy to have available for problems you’d never think of ahead of time. Having a cell phone available is also key in case of breakdown.
A lock de-icer is a good item to hang on your keychain because nothing would suck worse than not being able to get in your car at all.

Good important info - Thanks!
Be careful with the jug of water part of your emergency kit. Since it's winter there is high probability it will freeze at some point, so make sure you leave room for expansion otherwise it might crack your container and you might be left with a wet mess leaking all over the rest of your emergency kit.
